文法: Grammar a Day - Level 2 [ やっぱり(やはり) (yappari) ]

やっぱり(やはり) (yappari) - As I thought; after all

--- Examples ---
貧乏でいるよりもやっぱり金持ちの方がいい。
Compared to being poor, I would after all prefer being rich.

あの娘は結構悩んでいたがやっぱり彼とは結婚しなかった。
Even though that girl was almost going to pieces, she did not (after all)
as expected get around to marry him.

やっぱりそうだったか!
It turned out exactly as I expected!

やっぱり!
That's what I thought!

やっぱりあいつは来なかった。
As I thought, that guy did not show up after all.

ヤッパリ、ずーとあったんだよ!
whaddayaknow it was there all along!

やっぱりあの娘(こ)に惚れてんだ!
You do have a crush on that girl!

ヤッパ、俺は掃除すりゃよかったんだ。
As I thought, I should have (it is good that I have) cleaned.

1:電車でいきますか?飛行機で行けばいいのに。
2:でもちょっと高いですね。やっぱり電車で行きます。
1: You're going by train? Wouldn't it be better to go by plane?
2: But it's a bit expensive. I'll stick with going by train.

週末の勉強だけじゃ、全然進歩しないよ。やっぱり、毎日やらないと意味がない。
You won't make any progress just studying on the weekends. It's meaningless
unless you do it every day.

日本にあるインドカレー屋のカレーの味って、やっぱり日本人の口に合わせて作られているよね。
The curry they serve in Japan is milder than real Indian curry. They adapt
it to Japanese tastes.

冬はやっぱり雪がないとね。
Winter does not look real without snow.

I think the Thai food at this place is seasoned so Japanese will like it.

あなたがなんと言おうと、私はやはりその説が正しいと思う。
For all you say, I still believe in the truth of the theory.

whaddayaknow - it was there all along!
(see new EX)
the examples were probably still in the DB, so when you put the grammar
item back in they reappeared, happily linked.

Sorry, changed your example a bit.
(contributor: bamboo4)

and i made it 'checked' and edited the main example... (contributor: dc)

This is GR entry item!
(contributor: bamboo4)

isn't there some sort of nuance for yahari as opposed to yappari
...気のせいかな (contributor: Snake)

yes, it's 気のせい。yahari and yappari are almost the same. I think
yappari is more casual than yahari. (contributor: Miki)

the opposite of やっぱり might be そんな(はずはない). hmm
this is suspicious. (contributor: Miki)

やっぱり is simply a double consonant degrading of やはり and as
such it is less formal than やはり. The newer generation has even
further degraded やっぱり to やっぱ. Unfortunately, it is here to
stay. (contributor: bamboo4)
