文法: Grammar a Day - Level 3 [ わけではない (wakedehanai) ]

わけではない (wakedehanai) - It does not (necessarily) mean that 〜;
I don't mean that 〜; It is not (true) that 〜; It is not the case that

*わけではない sentences and their context (whether before or after)
are often connected by conjunctions like が and しかし.

FORMATION:
いA + わけではない
なA + な + わけではない
V(plain form) + わけではない

--- Examples ---
失敗というわけではない
it does not mean that it was a failure.

全然見込みがないわけではないが、あまり期待はしない方がいいでしょう
it does not mean that there is no hope, but you'd better not expect too
much

あいつは馬鹿というわけではないがそれにしても、やってることはどうかなあ。
While I am not saying he is stupid, I have my doubts when I look at what
he is actually doing.

世界中の人が同じ言語を話すわけではないので、現在、翻訳に多くの努力が費やされている。
Because people in the world don't speak the same language, much effort is
now devoted to translation.

あの男しかいないわけではないよ。
He is not the only pebble on the beach.

あれは全く誤りというわけではない。
That is not altogether false.

今日はとりわけ暑いというわけではない。
It is not especially hot today.

この規則はあらゆる場合に適用されるわけではない。
This rule can not be applied to every case.

これらの卵が全部新鮮というわけではない。
It is not that all these eggs are fresh.

すべての人が若い頃の夢を実現できるわけではない。
Not everyone can realize the dreams of his youth.

知り合いになれて嬉しくないってわけじゃないんだよ。
It's not that I'm not happy to meet you.

人間は働くために生まれてきたわけではない。
It's not true that people were born in order to work.

退院しましたが、病気が治って退院したわけではないんです。
I was discharged from the hospital, but it doesn't mean I was cured and
discharged.

梅雨には雨が降るけれど、ザーザー強く降るわけではありません。
It rains during the rainy season, but it doesn't necessarily rain hard.

Used similarly to 'That's not to say that ___' (contributor: Amatuka)

I read manga for practice, and this phrase appears frequently in some form
or another. I see it frequently when there has been some form of a
misunderstanding (そういう訳じゃない、よ!) (contributor:
LittleFish)

that might be the opposite of という訳で (for that reason) but also
used for summing up meetings. See (contributor: dc)

Also you can say, というわけではありません
I feel わけではない is heavier maybe becuase it clearly denied with
ない. (contributor: Miki)
